Sattriya Dance Act
Bio
Sattriya is a classical dance form that originated in the state of Assam in northeastern India. It is closely associated with the Sattras, the monastic institutions of the Vaishnavite tradition in Assam. Sattriya dance is known for its rich cultural heritage, spiritual themes, and vibrant movements.
Sattriya dance traces its roots back to the 15th century when the great saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhavdeva introduced it as a medium of devotional expression. It was initially performed exclusively within the Sattras to propagate the religious teachings of the Vaishnavite sect, but it has since gained recognition as a standalone classical dance form.
